be : ~이다
able : 능력있는 상태 (형용사)
to 부정사 : (미래에) ~할
be able to : (미래에 의지있게) ~할 능력을 가지고 있다.
was/were able to : (과거에 의지있어) ~할 능력을 가지고 있어서 했다.
조동사 'can' 도 능력이 있음을 나타냅니다.
그럼 둘 사이에 차이점이 뭘까요?
'can' 은 단순히 능력이 있음만 나타냅니다.
할지 안할지는 모르는 얘기에요.
be able to 는 미래에 의지있게 할 것에 대한 능력을 나타냅니다.
실제로 할거라는 의미를 포함해요.
연습, 훈련 등을 통해서 얻어진 능력은 이런 표현이 잘 어울립니다.
I can play a piano.
이렇게 쓰면 나는 피아노를 칠 수 있다는 말이죠.
I am able to play a piano.
내가 지금 피아노를 칠 수 있으면서 연습을 통해 칠 수 있는 능력을 가지게 되었다는 느낌이에요.
미래에 기꺼이 할거라고 표현한다면 이렇게 쓸 수 있겠죠.
I will be able to play a piano.
미래에 할 수 있다는 표현에서 'can' 을 사용하면
'will', 'can' 조동사가 2개가 되어서 문법이 안맞아요.
이럴때 be able to 를 사용해서 표현할 수 있어요.
문법적으로 조동사 'can' 을 사용할 수 없을 때 사용할 수 있다고 생각하면 편합니다.

해석상 차이는 거의 없지만 '찾으려 했는지 의도'에 대한 부분과 특정 사건보다 더 과거임을 나타태주지 못합니다. (여기서는 연주자가 도착하기 전에 일어난 일임을 서술함.)
